Greenwood Software
Welcome!
This is my personal Linux and Apache supported website.
My name is Bill Perkins and I live west of
Richmond,
Virginia in western
Henrico
county near a place called
Short Pump. I am
a Linux/UNIX Systems Administrator with extensive server and network
experience.
If you, or anyone you know, are looking for an experienced
Linux/Solaris/HP-UX/AIX Systems Administrator for a job located
in Virginia, take a look at my resume
and give me a call.
I have supplied on this webpage a few links that a Linux neophyte
or a fellow Linux guru might find of use. I have also supplied
some links about my home town and state.
Links
-
On the Red Hat Software
web page is sold a great enterprise edition of Linux software that
works very well in a server environment for a variety of applications.
Red Hat Enterprise editions come with stable feature sets that are
not generally updated within a major release. They only issue software
fixes for problems as they are found, and they usually fix these
problems very quickly. If you looking for a desktop or work station
(WS) version, they will certainly sell it to you in a package that
includes support. If you feel that you can do most of the support
yourself, except for software fixes and updates, go take a look at
the free Fedora distribution for Linux.
-
This Fedora Project
link will supply you with information and access to Red Hat's
replacement for the Personal Edition that they no longer sell over
the counter. Fedora is freely available and a little bit on the
bleeding edge in the case of feature sets, but I have been using it
in server and desktop situations with great success since Fedora One
version came out about five years ago. The Fedora team is very good
at releasing timely patches for software problems as they are found.
The current version is Fedora 10 and is quite stable. Bittorrent
download links for this release are available at the
Fedora Project Bittorrent
Tracker website.
-
CentOS is an
Enterprise-class Linux Distribution derived from sources freely
provided to the public by a prominent North American Enterprise
Linux vendor. CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendors
redistribution policy and aims to be 100% binary compatible.
-
The Debian GNU/Linux
distribution of Linux is totally free (as in free beer)
GNU software. It currently
includes 18733
packages. The current version of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r5 was
released October 23rd, 2008.
-
The SuSE (Novell)
Distribution home page gives you the choice of an
additional great Linux enterprise edition. I have had great
success using Suse Enterprise in the server environment.
OpenSUSE Linux,
the freely available version, can be downloaded
from
http://download.opensuse.org/.
-
Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) Linux is a great distribution
for someone new to Linux.
-
Ubuntu is another great distribution to try, and is aimed
at those people who are new to Linux and want a quick way to get
started.
-
The Apache Software Foundation
is the home for the Apache web server software. Apache
is the web server that I am using to present this web page to you.
It not only works with Linux and BSD UNIX, but also with Windows XP.
The above link also includes a list of other projects that are under
the auspices of this foundation. including SpamAssassin: a spam mail
filter, Ant: a java based build tool, and other software projects.
-
If you are looking for an inexpensive office suite (like free!) for
your PC. How about one that only cost you the time to download it?
If so, than OpenOffice.org
is the one for you. It is multi-platform, multi-lingual
and open-source. It runs just fine on Linux, MAC and Windows.
-
FVWM is the window
manager I run on my workstations along with the Gnome desktop. I
have been using FVWM in its various iterations for more than ten
years.
-
A very good choice for a desktop is
Gnome. This is the default
desktop on Red Hat and Fedora.
-
Another good one is The K Desktop
Environment (KDE) Project. Suse and Mandriva use KDE as
their defalt desktop.
-
Linux Online! A good
starting point for Linux Newbies.
-
Here is a site to try called
Linux Today for more
of the latest news about Linux and other related subjects.
-
Another good Linux news site is LXer
Linux News Headlines.
-
Slashdot! -
A good site for fast breaking News about Linux, computing in general
and other interesting stuff.
-
The Linux Weekly News is
published every Thursday and details a variety of subjects related
to Linux with updates every day.
-
"Loads of Linux Links." - This site is a great starting
point for Linux users and has many links to Linux related sites.
This is a Sourceforge website.
-
LIVNA - If
you are running a Fedora distribution and want to run some extra
programs that were not included with Red Hat or Fedora, this is a
good site on which you may find them.
-
FreshRPMS - Another
good site to visit if you are running a Fedora distribution and
want to run some those extra programs that Red Hat or Fedora did
not include in their distributions,
-
Dag Wieers
- This is another great site to check for RPM packages
for Red Hat/Fedora based systems. You will find some software
here that you will never see in a Red Hat/Fedora distribution.
-
If you are looking for sources of the latest and greatest
versions of Linux software, check here at Freshmeat or here at
IceWalkers
or search for RPM packages
here.
-
KNOPPIX is a
bootable CD with a great collection of GNU/Linux software.
Knoppix is based on
Debian and KDE
, and makes a great rescue disk for any Linux based system.
-
Go to Groklaw

that Request For Comments (RFC) document that covers a Internet
related terminology or specification for which you have been
looking. You can also check an index of RFCs on this site.

Information from the
Virginia State Parks site shows where all of the state
parks are located. These parks allow for all kinds of activities
for the family: such as camping, picnicking, hiking, and in some
parks swimming.
More links to be added as we go along. :-)
